I realized yesterday that along the way I've made up a rule for myself that has helped me be consistent with my creative habits. It also has turned out to be sort of my thing, my brand maybe? Its one of the things that makes my stuff recognizable.
So here's my secret productivity tip. That's what the headline should be right? Crystal's #1 secret productivity tip for getting your creativity habit done each day... womp, womp, whah...
I am not allowed to eat until my creative work is done.
So right now that means my painting has to be done before lunch. Last year, my drawing had to be done before breakfast. I'm sure it would work at dinner time too.
This works because I really like to eat. Like really.
And it works because if I don't follow it, then I don't have my signature photo. There won't be a lunch to go with the painting and there won't be mid-day sun to properly light the photo. I have to stay on schedule.
And it works because there has to be a set ending point. Somedays I've got to let it go. Let go of the idea that every day is going to go great. Let go to the ebb and flow of the creative process. Let go because often, the further I push a painting the worse it gets.
So there's the big secret. I paint so that I can eat.
