When crazy things happen, I paint. And it's felt good to look into these eyes the past couple months.
If you missed my first post, here's the story behind this piece. Toward the end of last year, my friend Brooked suggested that I paint Ruth Bader Ginsburg as part of my portrait project. I liked the idea but my series was called Monday Mournings and all my subjects were dead! So I wanted to do something to set this one apart from the series. My solution was go BIG! Since I'm just started to paint large I sketched it out at my usual size and then used the grid system to enlarge it on the 2 foot square panel.
Then I just started painting. At first I painted box by box but soon I was just painting wherever.
It was at this point that progress really slowed down. I always lose interest at this point in the process because most of the major decisions have been worked out. And that's where the fun is for me.
The title comes from an SNL skit. I've been watching a lot of SNL lately and my friend Brooke and I share a love of SNL. There's an episode where Kate McKinnon played Hillary and said in reference to the presidency "I'll be a stone cold B" and that's how I felt painting this piece, RBG is a stone cold B. Now whether you take that as a put down or a compliment, thats up to you. ;)
I'm working on getting prints made. Overall it's just a big hooray for finishing a large piece. And I'm so ready to move on to the next one. :)
