reflection

Awhile ago I tried meditation, just a minute or two first thing in the morning. I'd sit on the edge of the bed and close my eyes. I'd try to think about nothing, use meditation beads, or sometimes say an affirmation to myself. I made it about three weeks. I felt like I was developing a habit, then lost momentum, and completely quit.

So today I sit alone in a quiet space and think about the why's and the what-to-do's. Why did I want to try meditation in the first place? Why didn't it work for me? And now what do I really want? What will work for me?

I was looking for a way to calm my mind. I was looking to find a moment of peace in the day. I was looking for focus and clarity.  I wasn't feeling any of those things afterwards. It was just something I did because I said I was going to try it.

Then today, I ran across these photos and they felt calm and peaceful. Each one feels like a moment of focus and clarity. Maybe for me, meditation is about sitting down with a cuppa in a clear space with lots of sunlight. It's having a few minutes of quiet. It's taking the time to notice the heat of my cup, the flavor of what's in it, the shadow that the light makes.

What does meditation look like to you?
