I don't usually read The Art of Manliness ;) but this post How to create habits that stick is really thorough and has some good examples. I definitely agree with the part about 'micro habits' which is similar to what James Clear says about making the habit as simple as possible or so easy it's silly not to do it. That's pretty much where I'm at with my book making habit. Every morning first thing, I open up Scrivener on my laptop and do something, anything. For this first week, it's not about what I get done. It's about getting into the habit of working on it every single day.
In the beginning of my drawing habit I used Seinfeld's method. Currently for my book habit, I have five days in a row or XXXXX. As I was looking back at those beginning days of drawing, I ran across day 47 when I gave myself some advice:
- Don't break the chain.
- Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be.
That's all I need to worry about for awhile and the rest will take care of itself.
