This weekend I got to participate in Artsfest. Artsfest is held here in Springfield and it's the largest arts festival in southwest Missouri. It's a big outdoor event that brings in artists from 16 states. I did not plan to participate. Between the booth fee, the cost of the tent, and the other things I'd need to purchase, it was just way out of my budget.
However this year the Springfield Regional Arts Council put together a booth called the Ozarks Gallery. They provided the tent and the gallery walls. They selected a small number of artists to participate. This was an awesome opportunity for me. I didn't have to purchase my own tent or structure to hang my work. I didn't have to pay booth fees. I also didn't have to be at the event the entire time. In return for taking care of all that, the Arts Council received 25% of my sales.
So here are the costs I did incur:
$20 -- entry fee
$5 -- city license
$10 -- hardware to hang my work
and each artist had to work a 2 hour session. (Totally worth it!)
Each artist was given two panels to hang their work. To prepare for the event I measured out my space at home and planned out how I'd hang my work. I had to make a few adjustments when I actually hung my work but all that planning ahead definitely helped out.
I sold 4 pieces for a total of $496. The Arts Council takes 25% so I took home $372. I made a little more than at the Hip Handmade Market and spent much less to participate.
On day two, I filled in the empty spots from day one, so it looked like this...
I'm so glad that they figured out this cool way for us both to benefit. I think this was a total win-win deal for everyone involved. And speaking of everyone involved, here's a few of the other artists that were in the Ozarks Gallery.
Eric Ray makes these incredibly detailed pen drawings.
Christie Snelson (left) paints landscapes, portraits, pets, etc. My favorites are her portraits.
And Doug Erb (right) is an illustrator who makes really fun illustrations with bold, flat color. Doug and I were both in the Arts Council's Caught My Eye exhibition last year. I love his work.
It was really fun to be a part of both Artsfest and this great group of artists. At the end of day two, we loaded up my work and headed home...
