77 terrible days

"It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. My mom says some days are like that. Even in Australia."  -Judith Viorst from the book: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Luckily my whole day wasn't terrible horrible but sometimes things happen that make me feel that way for awhile. So how to deal with frustration and disappointment with my art and process? What do I do when nothing seems to be going my way? I've started a list of strategies that work for me. So when the situation arises, I choose one. Here's my short list:

  • Go outside--this one works for just about anything
  • Clean something--this one works well when I'm angry with myself
  • Play a game with my kids--this one works well when I'm anxious
  • Take a break, leave it be for awhile--only works when I don't have a deadline

And then top off each one with a good night's sleep. Tomorrow is a new day. Even if I still have yesterday's problems, I'll likely have a new outlook on them. Alexander's mom may have said some days are like that but my mom said don't be a crybaby.
