Over the last week, I've been doing a quick sketch of various women artists. I usually read a little about each one and maybe jot down a quote from them that I find interesting. It's been good portrait practice and interesting research but it hasn't really led me to any big project just yet.
I did find it really interesting how difficult it was to go from the shaded drawings where I'm looking at mostly values to the line drawings. It was a really difficult switch for my brain to make. I felt like I could only focus on value OR line and not both at the same time. Since then, I've been trying to force myself to go back and forth between the two. Hopefully I'll get more comfortable with both.
I find this often is the case with everything in art for me but the way I feel most comfortable drawing is not the look I prefer. The shaded portraits seem to happen a little easier for me lately yet I love the look of loose line drawings. Do you find that in your own work? The look you like is NOT the look that come naturally to you? Maybe it's just natural for us to place more value on things that are more difficult for us.
