So I guess it takes time to figure out what works and what's for you. After 255 days, I think I finally have some strong opinions. I still like trying new media and I know I'll continue to add to my tool box but for now here's what I like best:
Moleskine Art Plus Sketchbooks, pocket size--This size packs up easily. If I don't have much time I can just draw on one side and it really only takes a few minutes to fill just one side. I like the quality/thickness/tooth of the paper. I've found that the color of the paper can really vary from off white to yellow so I prefer to buy them locally. That way I can see the edges before I buy. I'm not a big fan of the yellow paper.
Moleskine Classic ruled, pocket size--I also like the lined notebooks for my planner and notes. I'm loosely using the bullet system this year. I like having the blank pages instead of the dated ones so I can put a page or two of notes in there wherever is needed and then pick back up with my calendar pages after.
Moleskine Art Plus Watercolor, pocket size--I also used the watercolor moleskine this year. I love the paper in this notebook. It's thick and white and has just the right texture. The disadvantage to this notebook is there's fewer pages at about the same price as the drawing one. (60 pages in this one versus 80 in the drawing one) Also that horizontal format really changes things for composition.
Sakura Pigma Micron Pen 05 and Sakura Pigma Graphic 1--Many artists have recommended the Micron pens and it didn't take long for me to love them too. At first I bought variety packs but now I know that I have two favorite sizes. I use the 05 to write in my notebook and for detail work. I use the Graphic 1 for most of my drawings. I like that it has a bolder line and the tip is a little more flexible.
I'm currently on my second lined notebook and finishing my fourth sketchbook this year. I'm on my third pen of both the 05 and the graphic 1. I like the idea of lining up these notebooks at the end of the year. I like having them to flip through and revisit past days. These little notebooks have become pretty special to me. They remind me where I started and where I'm going.
