In just two short days it will be November and only 62 days remain to complete this year of creative habits. Unbelievable. As usual, my mind is wandering ahead. November is a meaningful month for this project because it was last November that I completed NaPhoPoMo (national photo posting month). I took and posted a photo each day. It was the first time I'd ever completed a daily project and it inspired me to go for an entire year. NaPhoPoMo was a spinoff of NaNoWriMo which is national novel writing month. I have no desire to write a novel but I am working on my own writing project. I am failing miserably with the task of writing daily, aside from these blog posts. So I have been thinking about how I can use NaNoWriMo to help me complete this writing project.
Here's what I know about creative habits that works...
- go into it with a plan--especially the what, when, and how
- have a back up plan
- be a part of a group of people working toward a similar goal
- share progress/results/failures every day
- pretend like everyone is depending on you
- focus on today
I will apply each of these to my writing. I know that first thing in the morning works for my drawing so I'm carving out some extra morning time in November. I'll do the writing first since that's the habit I'm struggling with. I'll do the drawing second or later because I feel confident that I can get that done even if I'm out of my routine. I'm joining in with NaNonFiWriMo so I'll be part of a community. I'll use the momentum of those participating in NaNoWriMo. I'll be sharing my writing progress on twitter. I'll focus on one day at a time. Over the next day or so, I'll work out the rest of plan such as how many words I'd like to write each day and how I'll share and track my days.
Maybe you have a writing project that you'd like to tackle in November. Join me!
