I'm currently reading three books again. And again, it sure is hard to finish one that way! But I did finish one of them. A Little Something Different is interesting, for one because it's a crowd-sourced book through the site Swoon Reads. Romances aren't usually my thing but the cover on this one got me. And it's a cute, easy read. It's wasn't the romance part that hooked me, it was the mystery. Something happened to main character Gabe to make him lose hearing in one ear and I had to find out the story. Tangent here. My mom has a friend who flips to the the back of a book and reads the ending first. Do people really do that?! I don't read the ending but I often flip to the back to check the number of pages. Since I'm more goal focused this year and I'm trying to finish 50 books, I like to know about how much of the book is left and then I'll often break it up into 25 or 50 pages chunks to read.
So anyway, in the back of A Little Something Different, there's an interview with the author. The first thing that caught my attention is that she wrote the book in six days! She said that she planned and made notes for weeks but then she sat down and wrote the book on a Thursday through Tuesday. I find that fascinating...talk about a sprint!
The other thing that got me was a writing ritual she mentioned:
"Sometimes when I'm a little bit blocked and I don't know what I'm doing, I just need to settle down and get writing. So, I'll lay out ten wintergreen Life Savers, the individually wrapped ones, or jelly beans, or Skittles or whatever. And I can only have one after I've written a certain number of words. And it works. The next thing I know, I have 2,000 words because I just really wanted the candy."
I love that idea. I could definitely work for candy. Two books left for this year...here's what I'm reading right now. I'm still (slowly) working my way through Quiet though I'm wondering if I'll finish this year! My son and I are not quite halfway through Blood Ties. One week to go, ya never know what will happen!
