Last Wednesday I spent the day ordering/buying all the things I needed for two upcoming events. I spent several more days doing all the framing, wiring, signing, sealing, and all that kind of stuff.
We are moving this weekend and so I knew I needed to go ahead and pack my bins for the Hip Handmade Market that is next weekend. That's a whole different kind of preparation for me. Usually I'm a bit of procrastinator so to be all packed up and ready for a show almost 10 days in advance feels pretty weird.
I did five events last year and I learned a lot. (I probably learned even more in the last few months as I prepared my taxes.) I looked at each event, both income and expenses. It helped me make some changes in preparation this year. I have an idea of how many pieces I need to take. I learned I can easily take less than what I had been taking. Less pieces mean better quality pieces and room for each one to shine. I learned at what price point I'm most likely to sell so I'm looking forward to doing fewer events this year but hopefully more successful ones.
I've been using these wood shelves from IKEA and they work great. I've set them up at each show, taken them down, and then put them back up in my studio. They've held up very well. This time I've snuck in an extra half shelf so that I can double up in one of my sections. I have a 6x8' corner booth and I'll set the shelves up into an L shape in the back corner. I have a 2x4' table and I'll float that along the front edge so that there's good flow through the booth. I'll use a sisal rug to pull it together and finish it off.
I set up all my work on the shelves and arranged and rearranged until I was happy with how it looked. Initially I planned to arrange them in a mostly chronological order to tell the story of a year of creative habits but no surprise that I ended up going with color instead. One shelf is mostly blues, one is reds/pinks, and the other is mostly green/neutral. I took photos so I have a reference when putting it all back together on the day of the show. Then I packed all the pieces up into plastic bins, mostly in the order that they go up.
Whew! It feels good but also weird to be ready in advance. I'm sure I forgot something! Maybe I have to time to figure out what I forgot and fix it before next Friday. ;)
