The rough sketches for the #letteringportfolio challenge over on Instagram are due. The assignment is to design playing cards and include hand lettering. Today we were to have two concepts ready and then choose one to complete.
I knew I wanted to go with some sort of art history theme for my cards. That's a big interest of mine and it always seems to spur me creatively. I decided to narrow it down to one artist for each set. I tried to think of artists that might pair with certain numbers and also with the king, queen, and jack cards. I was looking for female artists that have a masculine side and male artists with a feminine side so that I could make a king and queen card of the same person.
I looked around at a few artists and their work and then settled on Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol. They both fit that description and have plenty of work to fill a deck of cards. I'm still not sure whether to letter the title of the piece or quotes from the artist. I may end up doing a mix of both. Lettering is not really my thing but something I want to improve on so I'll be spending more time on that part of the design in the next phase.
It's not too late to join in. Final art is due on Sept. 13.
