After Andy’s death, Jean-Michel’s heroin use spiraled out of control. His friends tried to help but he became more and more volatile and reclusive. He became haunted by the thought of his own death, a premonition maybe?
In the summer of 1988, he went to Hawaii to get away and to get clean.
But Jean-Michel Basquiat lost the fight and died of a drug overdose on August 12, 1988 at the age of 27. Five days later he was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
A formal memorial service was held in which the band Gray played. Poems were read by two of his ex-girlfriends Suzanne Mallouk and Jennifer Goode. Fab 5 Freddy read a poem by Langston Hughes and these words were spoken by friend & artist Keith Haring
