The year of creative habits begins in about 10 days! It's time to get prepared. I've been thinking about my first habit and ways to keep myself on track and accountable. As I said here the idea for this project comes from several different artists, one of which is Austin Kleon. In his book Steal Like an Artist, he shares a productivity tip from Jerry Seinfeld:
Here’s how it works. He told me to get a big wall calendar that has a whole year on one page and hang it on a prominent wall. The next step was to get a big red magic marker. He said for each day that I do my task of writing, I get to put a big red X over that day. “After a few days you’ll have a chain. Just keep at it and the chain will grow longer every day. You’ll like seeing that chain, especially when you get a few weeks under your belt. Your only job next is to not break the chain.” “Don’t break the chain,” he said again for emphasis. ~ Jerry Seinfeld
My creative task for January probably won't be writing but this tip will work for any habit. So I made up a little January calendar with the reminder "Don't break the chain." so I can track my progress. You can get the calendar here. Just print on a sheet of paper and get a big marker to track your creative habit.
I love books (and winning!) so I thought another great start to a year of creative habits would be to give away a copy of the book, Steal Like an Artist: 10 things nobody told you about being creative by Austin Kleon. It's a short but great read...a little book that often stays on my desk and doesn't get put away for long. To enter to win, please comment on this post. I'll randomly select a winner and post here on January 1.
*You are too late. This giveaway is gone. Congratulations to mistyfuji!
*It would be great if you subscribed and participated in the year of creative habits but it is not necessary in order to win. It would also be great if you shared this, however that does lessen your odds in winning. Tough call.
