T-4 days friends! I'm popping in today to share my first creative habit. I haven't set any specific goals for 2014 (other than building my creative habits) but I know that one of them will be to get back into drawing. I remember my first drawing class in college and it was horrible. I hated most of it. I didn't begin to like drawing until I took a figure class. I thought (and still do) that people were the hardest to draw but my teacher found ways to loosen us up and draw us out of our comfort zones (see what I did there? Punny, right?!)
We began each class with a 5 minute blind contour drawing of the model. In this case, blind means that you aren't allowed to look at your paper while drawing. The exercise forces you to really look at the model and not to worry about the results. If you aren't familiar with blind contour drawings, you can see some examples here. So that's my plan--one 5 minute blind contour drawing everyday in January.
In preparation for my year of creative habits, I set up this desk for myself. It was an awkward bay window space that wasn't really big enough for much anything before. Now it's a bright little spot where I can stash my stuff. Sometimes I'll work here, other times I won't but I like having a place to arrange my things. Full disclosure: to the left of the picture is a big pile of books, papers, and other supplies...I'm calling it a 'creative mess.'
So creative friends it's time--select your habit, gather your supplies, and make space for it in your life. Please join me in living a year of creative habits.
