Matisse’s daughter Marguerite was his model, muse and manager. As a child, she needed a tracheotomy and had quite a scar from the ordeal. He always painted her with a ribbon around her neck or a high collared shirt to conceal the scar. In 1944, she was imprisoned by the Gestapo, tortured, and interrogated for aiding the French Resistance. Marguerite managed to escape during transport to a death camp.
