Part of this process, year of creative habits, is going to be learning how to get unstuck. Yesterday I said on Twitter and Instagram that I'm getting tired of drawing my kids at breakfast and that it is time for a change. A few weeks ago, I checked out this Basquiat book from the library. At the time I was thinking about this part in Steal Like an Artist:
"Instead, chew on one thinker--writer, artist, activist, role model--you really love. Study everything there is to know about that thinker. Then find three people that thinker loved, and find out everything about them. Repeat this as many times as you can. Climb up the tree as far as you can go. Once you build your tree, it's time to start your own branch."
Jean-Michel Basquiat is an artist that I love. I thought I'd begin with him and study him. Where did he get his ideas? What were his methods? This morning, I pulled that book out again. As I read, I sketched and took a few notes.
I'm not sure where these drawings will take me but they sure were fun. And it was nice to play with some colors this morning. Are you ready for some changes in your creative habits too?
